About Alto's Odyssey

Alto's Odyssey takes the endless snowboarding of the first game into a vast desert. Instead of a snowy mountain, you now glide down golden dunes, past ancient temples and across canyons, as Alto and his friends search for new horizons. The look and feel are as soothing as before, but the setting changes how you play.

The most noticeable difference is the terrain. Sand slopes are smoother and longer, with big hills that launch you into the air, and you can ride along walls, bounce on balloons and grind along rooftops. A new feature allows you to wall-ride, which gives you extra moves. Rivers of sand and changing weather, including sandstorms and rain, alter visibility and mood, so each run feels different.

Controls remain a single touch. You tap and hold to jump and flip, and release to land. Chaining tricks builds combos, and landing smoothly keeps your speed. There are also goals to complete, new characters to unlock, and a zen mode for those who prefer to glide without pressure. The soundtrack, mixing gentle piano and ambient sounds, makes the game a calm place to spend a few minutes.

If you played the first game, you will recognise the rhythm, but the new elements make it feel fresh.

Beginners should focus on landing flips cleanly, since a crash ends a run. Look for hot-air balloons and use them to bounce to high places, and take advantage of the rails when you see them. Do not try for risky tricks if you are near an obstacle, as a safe landing is better than a failed double flip.

The game is free with ads and optional purchases, and works offline. It runs well on most phones, though the visuals are best on newer devices. Many players use it as a way to relax, so the zen mode is a worthwhile addition for people who want the beauty without the challenge.

Daily goals and unlockable characters give a longer-term reason to play, but the game never forces you to chase them. Many players simply enjoy a few gentle runs at sunset, using the game as a calm moment between other tasks.

If you like atmospheric, gentle arcade games, it is a beautiful follow-up to the original.
