How to Save Storage and Mobile Data When Playing Games

Many popular games are large, and updates arrive often. If your phone is short on space or your data plan is limited, these habits will keep games running without unpleasant surprises.

Check the size before you install

The store shows a download size, but many games download more content after the first launch. If the game offers a choice between a smaller package and high-quality graphics, the smaller option is usually enough on a budget phone.

Download on Wi-Fi only

In the Play Store settings, set app downloads and updates to Wi-Fi only. Large games can use several hundred megabytes of mobile data in one update, which can use up a daily limit quickly.

Clear cache, not everything

In your phone's app settings you can clear an app's cache, which removes temporary files without deleting progress. Clearing app data is different and may remove saved progress unless it is linked to an account, so check before doing it.

Back up your progress

Link your progress to an account when the game offers it, so you can reinstall without starting again. This also lets you free space safely by uninstalling games you rarely play.

Reduce background use

Turn off notifications and background data for games that you only play occasionally. Lower the graphics quality in the game settings if your phone gets warm or the battery drains quickly.

Choose offline-friendly games

Many puzzle, card and arcade games work without a connection. They are ideal for travel or for plans with limited data. Our guides mention whether a game needs the internet where we can confirm it.

Keep an eye on battery

Long sessions with maximum brightness drain a battery quickly. Reduce brightness, close unused apps and carry a power bank for long trips.
