About Wordscapes: Word puzzle game
Wordscapes is a word puzzle game that feels like a crossword and an anagram puzzle at once. You are given a set of letters in a circle at the bottom of the screen, and you swipe across them to form words that fit into a crossword-style grid above. Fill the grid and you move on to the next level, with a pretty nature background to reward you.
Each level asks you to find the words in the grid, but you can also find extra words that are not in the grid. Those bonus words earn coins, which can be spent on hints. This gives the game a nice two-layer feel. You can focus on completing the grid, or you can enjoy hunting for every possible word from the same letters, which is a pleasing challenge for vocabulary lovers.
The game starts gently with three or four letters and builds to larger sets, which allow longer, more interesting words. It is also a good way to learn new words, as the game accepts many valid English words, and seeing one accepted for the first time can be a small thrill. Hints are available when you are stuck, including revealing a letter or pointing to a word, and the shuffle button rearranges the circle to help you see new combinations.
A few tricks help. Shuffle often, since changing the order of the letters can make a word jump out. Start with short words, which reveal letters for the longer ones crossing them. Look for common endings such as -ing, -ed and -er, and think about plurals. If you are completely stuck, step away for a minute and return, because fresh eyes spot words surprisingly fast.
The game suits people who enjoy quiet, thinking-based play, and it has no timer, so you can take as long as you like. There are daily puzzles and events for extra rewards. It is free with ads and optional purchases for coins, and an internet connection is recommended for saving progress.
Over time you will probably notice your vocabulary improving. Playing regularly trains you to see letter patterns, prefixes and suffixes quickly, and that skill carries over to other word games and even to writing. There is no pressure to be perfect, though. A level can be solved slowly, and the cheerful scenery keeps the mood relaxed from start to finish.
If you like words, patterns and a relaxed pace, it makes for a very pleasant daily habit.
